Trial testimony wraps up in Scott woman's slaying
Friday, August 29, 2008

Testimony concluded yesterday in the trial of a Scott man charged with fatally shooting his wife and then forcing a friend to transport her body out of state and dispose of it.

After a day off today for pretrial conferences, the jury will return Tuesday to hear closing arguments in the trial of Henry Lanz, 42, for the slaying of Paula Lanz, 39, in January 2007. He is charged with homicide, conspiracy, hindering apprehension or prosecution, making false reports to law enforcement, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

Yesterday, the jury heard from the final two prosecution witnesses. A court officer said Mr. Lanz twice violated a protection from abuse order filed by his wife. A co-worker of Ms. Lanz also testified that he overheard a man he believed was Mr. Lanz threatening his wife over the phone.

Defense attorneys called Greg Smollen, who had been incarcerated with Karl Laughlin, a witness who testified earlier this week that he burned Ms. Lanz's body. Mr. Smollen, citing a conversation he said he'd had with Mr. Laughlin in jail, contradicted Mr. Laughlin's testimony about the origin and disposal of the gun used in the crime.
