Numerous traffic changes will take place starting tonight on the Parkway North/Interstate 279, including shifting traffic currently using the high occupancy vehicle lanes in the southbound direction back onto the mainline.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation also has announced this week's schedule for the Parkway East/I-376 and for the Parkway West/Route 60 in the Robinson area.
On the Parkway East, ramps and shoulders are being closed overnight for the reconstruction project between the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange and Business Route 22, Wilkins. All lanes will remain open on the mainline.
On the Parkway West, traffic is being reduced to a single lane in both directions starting at 8 p.m. nightly until 6 a.m. the next day, through Friday morning, from the Business Route 60/Route 60 junction east to the Route 22-30/Steubenville Pike interchange for the ongoing repaving work. Several ramps also will be blocked off at the Robinson Town Centre and the Montour Run Road interchanges.
PennDOT announced no work will take place on the Parkway East or Parkway West over Labor Day weekend.
As for the Parkway North, numerous changes and restrictions will be imposed while traffic is taken off the HOV and while the $11.2 million repair and preservation project continues.
Although the traffic shift will begin at 8 tonight, the HOV lanes will remain closed to prepare for shifting outbound traffic there in mid-September, similar to how the HOV lanes were used to ease congestion during southbound work.
Single lane closures are being imposed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. in both directions, southbound from Camp Horne Road to East Street, and northbound around the Perrysville Avenue exit.
The Venture Street on-ramp to I-279 south is closed nightly through Friday morning, as well as the I-279 overpass at the Perrysville Avenue interchange.
Although the Parkway North has only been open since 1989, PennDOT is making minor repairs and improvements over the first eight miles north of Pittsburgh to avoid more costly work in the future.
Next year, PennDOT plans to do the same type of work on the balance of I-279 north to the I-79 junction in Franklin Park.
