SPECIAL NOTES

DUI alert -- PennDOT will partner with more than 300 municipal police departments and state police to crack down on impaired drivers over the Labor Day weekend. The same holiday period last year proved to be the deadliest for alcohol-related crashes: 175 of them, resulting in 11 fatalities. If you get a DUI, be prepared to pay up to $10,000 in fines, legal fees, higher insurance premiums and other costs.

Appreciating truckers -- National Truck Driver Appreciation Week begins today. The sponsoring American Trucking Association has singled out two drivers from the region, Anthony Daviduk, of Chicora, and Bob Morgan, of North Huntingdon, both employed by the trucking firm A. Duie Pyle, based in West Chester, Chester County Pa.

PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE

Blasting in Westmoreland -- Traffic being stopped up to 20 minutes between Irwin and New Stanton interchanges 9 a.m.-noon Monday through Thursday, and occasionally early Saturday, for excavation in advance of widening the highway to three lanes in each direction. No more than one stoppage each day.

INTERSTATES

I-70, Washington County -- Ten-mile resurfacing project under way between Kammerer Exit and I-79 South Junction. Contractor works 8 p.m.-8 a.m. most days, weather permitting.

I-79, Greene County -- Resurfacing, related work at three separate locations. Varying lane restrictions.

I-376/Parkway East -- No restrictions on the mainline in the construction zone between Monroeville and the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange. But numerous ramps are closed or restricted until 5 a.m. tomorrow.

I-279/Fort Pitt Bridge -- Single-lane closures in both directions for cleaning. Work begins at 7 p.m. and lasts until 6 a.m. for another week. All ramps open.

I-279, Ross -- Two inbound lanes shifted to the HOV lanes beyond Perrysville Avenue Interchange until mid-September for maintenance, bridge work. Right lane of McKnight Road still closed this week, 7 a.m.-5 p.m., for bridge repairs near the I-279 interchange.

Parkway West, Robinson -- Single-lane traffic in both directions near the I-79 interchange (Exit 1A) in Robinson, until 5 a.m. tomorrow. Ramp closing and restrictions. Anticipate delays; consider alternate routes.

TUNNELS

Liberty Tunnels -- Outbound (southbound) tunnel is closed 10 p.m.-6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday nights through February for $5.3 million in repairs, new portals. Detour via McArdle Roadway to Route 51/Route 19. Inbound tunnel not affected at this time.

STATE HIGHWAYS

Route 19, Marshall -- Single-lane traffic patterns weeknights for repairs on the Pennsylvania Turnpike overpass just south of Cranberry. Late September finish.

Business Route 22, Monroeville/Wilkins -- Traffic reduced to a single lane each direction, 9:30 p.m.-9 a.m. weekdays through late October, for resurfacing between the Parkway East and Route 48, a total of four miles.

Route 22, Westmoreland County -- Widening project east of New Alexandria continues. Lanes closed in both directions between Hannastown Road, Murrysville, and Route 119, Salem, through mid-October for concrete repairs.

Route 28, Etna area -- At the 62nd Street Bridge, Route 8 south ramp to Route 28 north is closed.

Route 51, Banksville -- Closed to "thru" traffic until 6 a.m. tomorrow in the southbound direction only at the Parkway West interchange for bridge work. Also, Route 51 north exit to the Parkway West outbound is closed for the weekend. Detours posted.

OTHER ROADS

Baptist Road, Bethel Park -- PennDOT reopened the busy stretch on Thursday between Millenium Drive and Lowes after a bridge replacement project that began in early March.

Boulevard of the Allies, Oakland -- Closed outbound east of the Parkway East entrance for interchange reconstruction. The boulevard inbound ramp to I-579 north closed this month for bridge deck repairs, but ramp to Liberty Bridge remains open.

Penn Avenue, East Liberty -- Traffic shifted from the eastbound lanes to the newly reconstructed inbound lanes, latest phase of the $3.1 million project covering 1.2 miles of Fifth Avenue/Route 8 and Penn Avenue. Fifth Avenue reduced to single alternating lane, 7 p.m.-6 a.m. weekdays through late September in Point Breeze area for paving, other improvements.

Stanwix Street, Downtown -- Closed between Fort Duquesne Boulevard and Penn Avenue for light-rail tunneling work.

MAJOR BRIDGES

Birmingham Bridge -- One lane maintained in both directions on the southbound side while PennDOT replaces rocker bearings on the northbound side.

Rankin Bridge -- One lane of traffic in each direction while the bridge undergoes a two-year rehabilitation.

PORT AUTHORITY

Quarterly service changes -- Mostly minor changes on light-rail and dozens of bus routes become effective next Sunday. New schedules for affected routes have been posted at www.portauthority.org. Printed timetables will be available this week. Current routing through Downtown will become permanent on these bus routes: 58C, 58P, 58V, 61A, 61B, 61C, 61D and 61F.

Sunday T detour -- All inbound light-rail service will operate via the Allentown line rather than the Wabash Tunnel until 5 p.m. today. Crews will be replacing a section of rail between Station Square and the Panhandle Bridge. Station Square riders heading Downtown can ride buses.
