State police are investigating a shooting early Monday on the Parkway East in which two passengers were wounded while riding in an SUV.
State police Cpl. Jennifer Brown said investigators have recovered a spent shell casing. It was located on the Parkway near the Allegheny County Jail hours after the shooting, which was reported at about 2 a.m. yesterday.
The driver of the SUV was not injured, nor identified by police.
Two passengers, Danielle R. Spell, 20, and Juan Middlebrook, 18, both of McKeesport, were taken by the driver to UPMC Braddock.
Ms. Spell had been riding in the front passenger seat, and Mr. Middlebrook had been riding in the back seat.
The wounded had not been interviewed as of this morning by investigators because they had surgery yesterday for their wounds, Cpl. Brown said.
The driver told police the SUV had been traveling east on the Parkway when a gunman in a black Chevy Monte Carlo fired at least two rounds at his vehicle.
Cpl. Brown said the witness did not explain why the victims were taken to the hospital in Braddock rather than Oakland, which would have been the next eastbound exit.
Ms. Spell was wounded in the abdomen. She was in guarded condition. Mr. Middlebrook was shot in the right leg, police said.
The suspect is described as a brown-skinned black male, about 5-feet, 7-inches tall wearing dark clothing.
Anyone with information about the shooting or the suspect is asked to call state police at 412-787-2000.
