Two more days of camp (after today of course) and then there is Fanfest Thursday and a few days after that it is game week. It looks to me like this team is rounding into form. I think there are a few more things that need to get worked out before the season begins but for the most part, the dust is clearing and the two-deep is really sorting itself out.

Q: Any thoughts on what player or players might be a surprise contributor this year? Maybe someone who is quietly flying under the media radar but will have an impact during the season.

Joe Lucko, Elizabeth

ZEISE: I don't know about surprise, just because so many of the players are discussed so much between spring and fall that there aren't many unknowns. I do think a couple of players who nobody ever seems to talk about are due to have big years. One would be outside linebacker Adam Gunn, who is fairly quiet, doesn't make too many waves and just works hard every day. He is one of the most consistent players on the team and he's been very productive. He's a player I think will have a stellar season. I think people will be surprised by how good Mick Williams is as well as freshman corner Jared Holley. One other player to watch -- though he likely needs an injury by someone ahead of him to really see enough playing time to make his presence known -- is redshirt freshman receiver Aundre Wright, who is a threat to take it to the endzone every time he touches the ball.

Q: Besides linebacker, is there another position on the team where the backup players lack game experience?

Luke Turko, Cecil

ZEISE: At right tackle, left tackle and right guard, the second-team players have never played a snap of college football. The back-up at center is likely going to be a walk-on with very little experience and neither backup defensive end has played much. And at corner, the three players who are battling for reserve spots are all true freshmen. So youth is going to be an issue if there is a few injuries at these spots, but the bottom line is if the starting lineup stays healthy it won't be an issue.

Q: You've noted on several occasions that Pitt has several glaring holes on the team. I am assuming that the offensive line is one of those glaring holes. What are the others that you see?

Greg Smith, Cumberland, Rhode Island

ZEISE: I think the offensive line is coming together nicely, so I'd say it is not quite a glaring hole but still needs to improve. The right tackle position is one area that still needs to improve and if it doesn't, well, then that would become a problem. Like I mentioned earlier -- there are some areas that depth is a big problem, not from the standpoint of there isn't enough talent but there just isn't much experience. I think this is especially true at defensive end where the two starters could potentially be superstars but the drop-off to their backups is fairly steep. I also think the offense is a question -- not necessarily the personnel -- but whether or not it will be aggressive, creative and innovative enough to keep defenses guessing. All in all this is the most complete football team coming out of camp of the Dave Wannstedt era, but there are at least a few areas I'd keep my eyes on.

Q: What freshman are looking like they will start this upcoming season?

Jack Wall, Pittsburgh

ZEISE: There might be one or two on special teams, like Andrew Taglianetti, but as far as the 22 starting spots on offense and defense -- I don't see any of them starting. Perhaps at some point Jonathan Baldwin will find his way into the starting lineup but that is not a lock as Pitt has a few veteran receivers who are both consistent and productive. Another freshman who could find his way into the starting lineup is Lucas Nix at the aforementioned right tackle spot. Right now though, the position is Joe Thomas' but Dave Wannstedt said yesterday he needs to become more consistent and play at a higher level than he has.
