Ask LaMont: Ditch perfume before interview
Monday, August 18, 2008
Q: I have a couple of big job interviews coming up and want to make sure my appearance is as up-to-snuff as my resume. My clothes are impeccable, but I'm not sure what type of fragrance I should wear. Something light and citrusy might make me seem young and immature, and something musky-woodsy might come across as too sexy and aggressive. What do you recommend?

A: I suggest that you wear no scent at all. Let the light aromas from your grooming products suffice. You never know if the people who will be interviewing you are allergic to ingredients in certain fragrances. There's also the possibility of wearing a scent that reminds the interviewer of an ex-spouse or a romance gone bad. Perfumes and colognes evoke all sorts of memories, not all of them pleasant. So, you're better off saving your spritz for the got-the-job celebration.
