The Good, the Bad and the Beautiful
Dems see stars, Dad Duff sees bars and Hef has a gate-crasher

The DNC has been one big celeb fest.

Spielberg! Affleck! J.Lo! They were among the Hollywood celebrities attending events in Denver as the Democratic National Convention nominated Barack Obama as the party's presidential candidate.

Steven Spielberg, who directed a short film on veterans that was shown Wednesday at the convention, was spotted entering the Pepsi Center.

Jennifer Lopez spoke at a reception honoring children's rights activist Marian Wright Edelman. Ben Affleck read excerpts from a Howard Zinn book and made an appearance at the city's food bank for America's Second Harvest.

Affleck was joined by his wife, Jennifer Garner, at the book reading at the Starz Green Room across the street from the Pepsi Center. Also participating: Rosario Dawson, Kerry Washington, Taye Diggs, Hill Harper and Josh Brolin.

Among other celebrity sightings around Denver:

• The Black Eyed Peas performed a concert at the Fillmore Auditorium for the Creative Coalition. Fergie praised Hillary Rodham Clinton's Tuesday night speech, saying Clinton "really spoke to me as a woman. And I think she spoke to a lot of people in that way."

• Politicians including former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner attended a ONE Campaign party featuring a Kanye West performance. Also in attendance: Forest Whitaker, Kal Penn, Jamie Foxx and director Davis Guggenheim. What West regretted when Obama became the Democratic party's presidential candidate: That his mother, Donda, hadn't lived to experience it.

Muhammad Ali sat in the convention audience.

Fran Drescher, Ashley Judd and Joy Bryant joined Lopez at the reception honoring Edelman.

Anne Hathaway and others gathered at a morning reception honoring Annette Bening for her work narrating the documentary "14 Women," about women in the U.S. Senate.

Big Boi of Outkast was at the airport on his way out of town after hosting a Radio One show where he interviewed John Legend, among others.

In other sightings, here's what other celebs were saying about the DNC in interviews with screenwriter and actor Danny Strong:

Rachael Leigh Cook ("She's All That," "Nancy Drew"): "A lot of people say, 'Well, what do you actors need? Why are you speaking up? You're not people who need anything.' And it's true, we're very blessed. But almost all of us come from real middle-class families, and because we have the platform that we do, it makes it a little bit easier for us to speak up, speak out. ... Mostly, I'm just here because I'm a bleeding-heart liberal and a concerned citizen, and I can't wait to hear the speeches."

Zooey Deschanel ("The Happening," "Elf"): "I don't feel very good about the last eight years. And I feel like we're in a place where we really need -- there's a lot of damage that we need to recover from, and we need a very strong and inspirational leader to bring us out of this. It's pretty grim."

Matthew Modine ("Full Metal Jacket"): "Over the last eight years, during my travels, I've seen [the love that people abroad have for our country] become so compromised that I don't know how we'll ever regain our stature in the world."

Josh Lucas ("Poseidon," "Sweet Home Alabama"): "If you go overseas you see how much there's an excitement that a country that the rest of the world felt got so lost suddenly is on track enough to make a change this dramatic -- not only an African American, but a man whose name is Barack Obama."

Back to reality, or is it? Who should pay the $25,000 bill for the celeb's birthday bash and present?

A judge officiating in the bitter divorce case between singer Hilary Duff's parents Bob and Susan Duff has ordered Dad to spend 10 days in jail for contempt of court.

Bob Duff was led away in handcuffs Wednesday during a court hearing after Judge Thomas Stansbury in Houston determined he violated an injunction against selling assets without court approval.

The Houston Chronicle reported in its online edition that Bob Duff must pay into a court repository $367,537 he earned from selling stocks last month.

Stansbury determined Bob Duff should pay Susan $12,500 for Hilary's birthday party, which was the subject of the hearing. Her mother wanted $25,000 to pay for a present and party. Hilary turns 21 on Sept. 28.

There's trouble at the Playboy Mansion.

A Ventura County man rammed his vehicle into the gates at Hugh Hefner's legendary home twice in the past week due to an "ongoing dispute" Los Angeles police said. The unnamed suspect was arrested and released after the first crash last Thursday night and then slammed his car into the gates again Tuesday but left before police arrived.

Kid Rock is showing his affection for Detroit with a new video for a song on his new platinum-selling CD "Rock 'N Roll Jesus."

The boisterous Detroit-area rocker and bandmates this week visited the Motown Historical Museum to shoot footage of them performing the song "Roll On." The museum is the former home of Motown Records.

A film crew also shot footage of Kid Rock driving around the city in a 1960s Lincoln Continental and visiting landmarks such as Tiger Stadium, the former home of the Detroit Tigers that is being demolished.

"I really wanted to capture the heart and soul of Detroit," he said.
